As you’ve probably seen, we’ve discussed painting your old wooden garden furniture as part of reviving it back to looking like new. However, as you may have guessed, painting is not the only process in reviving wooden patio furniture. Reviving wooden lawn furniture has actually become a popular option. It is a bit more time consuming than just going out and buying new pieces, though it can save you money in short term and long term. It will also save you the hassle of having to get rid of your old pieces. With that being said, you are probably wondering when your wooden garden furniture is in need of being revived. Realistically, the answer is whenever you feel it is appropriate, as it is your decision. However, it is generally recommended that wooden patio furniture is revived when it has peeling paint, and/or chipped or splintered wood.

In order to refinish or revive your wooden lawn furniture, you will need a few materials in order to get rid of any existing imperfections. You should make sure you have adequate stock of waterproof glue, paintbrushes, exterior paint, stain-killing primer, and paste wood filler. You will also need some cloth, a putty knife, a stiff wire brush, a clamp, and some sandpaper of varying sizes. Once you have gathered all the materials necessary, it is time to get to work, and bring your wooden garden furniture back to life.

With that being said, the first thing that you should do to fix up your patio furniture is to use the stiff wire brush to scrub the splintered or chipped wood. The reason why this step is very important is that it will remove the paint and wood chips that are loose and could hinder your efforts.

Once you have removed all the troublesome loose wood and paint chips, it is time to use the take any of the splintered pieces, and apply to them the waterproof glue. Once the glue is applied, it will be necessary to clamp the splintered pieces until they are completely dry. At that point, you will want to use your putty knife to apply a paste wood filler over any damaged spots. It is very important that you cover any and all damaged spots completely with the paste wood filler. Failing to do so will ruin any effort of revival.

The next step to take in the refinishing of your wooden garden furniture is to smooth down the wood filler that you’ve applied, and make sure its indistinguishable from the overall wood surface. Once it has been smoothed down, allow it to sit overnight. The following day, use the sandpaper you’ve purchased, and sand the filler. Finally, dampen one of the cloths, and then wipe the residue from the sanding.

Once you’ve gotten to this point, it is time to repaint the wooden garden furniture. You should re-sand the furniture along the grain until the piece of furniture is as smooth as possible. Then paint the wood with your primer, and let it dry. You may need to use the stain-killing primer if there are any noticeable dark damaged areas. Once the stain is applied and dried, you should then paint the furniture in its entirety. After the first coat has dried, you should apply a second coat. Once the second coat has been applied and dried, then you are all finished.
